Mineral Makeup

A popular question I hear all the time is, what do you think about mineral makeup? To answer this, you have to ask yourself, what is mineral makeup? Minerals like titanium dioxide, mica, and iron oxides have been in makeup for years, and is nothing new to the cosmetic industry. So many consumers try to be good consumers by buying "natural", "mineral", "healthy" products. But, beware... just because it says "mineral" on it, does it make it a good product?

Strolling through CVS the other day, I picked up various mineral makeup foundations and most of them had the same crappy ingredients that have been in makeup for years. Let's do point out that "mineral oil" is HORRIBLE for your skin and clogs pores. If this is the first (or last) ingredient listed in your foundation, throw it away. And why are dyes and fragrance in a mineral and all natural foundation? "All natural ingredients" does not mean that ALL of the ingredients are natural.

So many cosmetic companies have hopped on the mineral bandwagon to sell you their makeup. However, I don't think that all mineral makeup's are bad. Your foundation should be fragrance free (a skin irritant), dye free (you should have no yellow # whatever, etc.), and mineral oil free.

There are several great mineral lines out there, but always take a few moments to see what the ingredients are. Also, bismuth, a popular mineral (it's what gives powders that "glow") is a great ingredient when used sparingly, or in the right places. If it's your first or second ingredient, and you can't figure out why you are always shiny, this is probably why. I prefer the foundation to be bismuth free, and to use the more glowy powders for highlighting.

I don't use alot of mineral makeups because they are in powder form. These are great if you just want a quick light dusting, or if you are 16 with perfect skin. My personal preference is liquid, and I can always get a fresher and more youthful look with them.

Jamie O'neal - Country Singer and Songwriter

Last month, Angela Talley (photographer) and I worked with Country music star Jamie O'neal before her concert. Angela captured some amazing images of the singer/songwriter before the show, and one of the photos is now the main photo on Jamie's new website.

Jamie's eyes are naturally that blue, and they needed to pop for her new site. We stayed with a pinky-peachy palette, and lined them with black gel liner, topped with lashes (of course!). I'll upload the other images from the shoot soon.

Ambassador House Shoot

It was a beautifull wintry shoot. Jessica (our model) did a fantastic job, especially considering how cold it was for the outdoor shots. Jennifer Driscoll shot all these gorgeous images, and Irina Green did this oh so fab hair!!! The Ambassador House is located in Fishers, and will be a great little venue for the city... Before and After

A Before and After for you... Today we will focus on brows! Jacqueline Keen of Jacqueline Keen Events , a client of mine offered to be my guinea pig for a day, and was such a great sport!! She is super sweet and always a joy to be around. Besides being an awesome person, she has some beautiful features that we focused on bringing out.

Eyebrows completely frame the face. My brows are very thin on outside as well, and by using a little powder to fill them in will create that definite space of brow/browbone. Also, even if you have light or sparse brows, they still need to be groomed for that perfect crisp look.

We also used the new EyeMAX Custom Blend Foundation to perfectly match her skintone.

June Brides!

Congratulations to my friend Cara! I'm so happy for her and her new hubby!! I've done Cara's makeup for years, and was so excited to be able to do the artistry for her and her bridal party this June, at least one last time before she moves away!!!

I met Cara years ago when I worked at the MAC store. She used to come in and it totally made my day, because she is so fun and giggly!! She also let me "experiment" with makeup on her!!

I also finally got to meet Lauren of Open Field Photography and she is such a sweetheart! They did a fab job of course, and you can check out their blog here, which you will have to add to your faves list!!

Why I love airbrush makeup

One of the reason's I love airbrushing is that it is especially great for dark skin tones. Kuleni had beautiful skin, but we wanted to adjust the color to match her neck and body. Many women of color have darker tones on the face, and then lighter necks. Airbrushing allowed me to match the yellow in her body, and tone down the darker pigments around her forhead without looking ashy. We also decided to go neutral with her eyeshadow, and created a clean classic look for her. I also had the pleasure of seeing Shelly Valentine the past few weekends. She did Kuleni's and also Jenny's wedding. You'll have to check out her blog! She is definitely talented at what she does!

How to apply false eyelashes like a pro

Ok, How do I get false eyelashes on?

1. Before applying lash adhesive, make sure the length of the lash band will fit your eyes so that your false eyelashes will be comfortable. You don’t want your lashes to start too close to the tear duct, or go beyond your natural lash line. You may have to snip a small section off if you eyes are smaller.

2. Apply eye shadow and mascara. This way your lashes will be the same color as the false pair and blend in better. Applying eye shadow first prevents the shadow dust from falling on top of the lashes.

3. Apply a thin line of DUO adhesive to the lash band. DUO comes in white, which dries clear, and also Dark tone, which dries black. I highly recommend the clear for beginners!

4. Allow the adhesive to dry for about 30 seconds. This allows it to become slightly tacky and easier to apply.

5. Get close to a mirror and apply the lash onto the eyelid as close to the lash line as possible. I've always read to use a pair of tweezers. You can try this, but I've never had any luck using tweezers, unless I'm putting individual (the ones that are 3-4 hairs with a knot on the end)lashes on. I usually do best with my tweezers.

6. You can apply mascara to the false lashes if you want. I usually don't prefer doing this because they are beautiful by themselves, and they don't look spidery.

7. Keep eyes relaxed and adhesive will be set in no time!

8. Finish off with liquid or gel liner.

If you applying lashes on someone else, the same tips apply, but I do make sure that my client is looking down when applying them. If they close their eyes, then the adhesive sticks to the bottom lashes and makes a mess!

"Sheenas" are one of my more popular styles of false eyelashes. Made famous (well popular anyway) by the cute and sassy Sheena herself.

This pair of lashes is one of my favorite styles! They aren't black, but dark brown and are cut to be not too spiky on the ends.

Welcome to the new EyeMAX by Kiralee. EyeMAX is a cosmetic line created by, of course, Kiralee. We are known for our line of false eyelashes, ranging from natural, glam, and wild!

False eyelashes aren't just for red carpet anymore. During Kiralee's 7 years as a professional makeup artist, enhancing eyes with lashes was a must! A pair of falsies make the lash line look thicker, eyes more awake, and bigger!

The inspiration to offer so many styles was because we had everyone in mind. We wanted to offer a variety of styles for the professional makeup artist whether they were working with a bridal party or extravagant runway makeup.
